interesting device: pixel-roller

“The “PixelRoller” project is a collabortive investigation into a new creative tool between Stuart Wood MA (RCA) Interaction Design and Florian Ortkrass MA (RCA) Design Products.

The pixel roller does exactly what it say it is, rolls pixels. It can be viewed like a hand printer, the pixel roller can roll out any image, video or text manually, at any speed or diraction, round corners and over surfaces.

In the first prototype, ‘Light Roller’, the pixels are in the form of a series of 12 ultra bright UV LEDs situated along its axis. These UV LEDs excite phosophescent ink and leave trails of pixels that fade with time. ”

Algorithmic design: GroboVision

An interesting aproach to algorithmic design and 3D modelling.

“GroboVision represents the future of GroBoto. Its high-speed rendering engine features constructive solid geometry (for sharp, polygon-free renderings) and the ability to work in true 3D space. Plus it offers the ability to render files of any size with alpha channels (when saved in TIFF format).

Eventually, this rendering technology will be incorporated directly into GroBoto, allowing near limitless 3D exploration of the fantastic world of GroBoto.”

real time video: jitter for MAX/MSP

http://www.cycling74.com/products/jitter

Jitter is part of MAX MSP: “In use worldwide for over fifteen years by performers, composers, artists, teachers, and students, Max/MSP is the way to make your computer do things that reflect your individual ideas and dreams. Max/MSP is a true cross-platform system compatible with both Mac OS X and Windows XP. ”

Jitter is the Video Component of MAX MSP:

“Jitter extends the Max/MSP programming environment to support realtime manipulation of video, 3D graphics and other data sets within a unified processing architecture.

Because Jitter, like Max/MSP, is generic in nature, it offers unlimited possibilities for creative exploration. Whether you are interested in video processing, interactive art, teaching new media, or data visualization, Jitter offers both high and low level tools for working in exciting new ways.

Jitter abstracts all data as multidimensional matrices, so objects that process images can also process audio, volumetric data, 3d vertices, or any numerical information you can get into the computer. Jitter’s common representation simplifies the reinterpretation and transformation of media. And with Jitter 1.5, many types of data can be processed on the GPU, leveraging the massively parallel computing power of today’s latest graphics cards.”
