mappe / portfolio

for presentations or getting a job it is essential for a creative or multimedia designer to have a compact and impressive portfolio. therefore it is essential to collect various materials over a long time period. it isn´t useful to start making a portfolio one week before the presentation. a good overview over your skills takes time and is hard work to do since the portfolio should incoporate your best work. for those who haven´t collected so much work until now, here are some tips, how a portfolio (or MAPPE ) can be done.

QUESTION: WHAT SOULD I PUT INTO THE PORTFOLIO?

ANSWER: a porfolio should give a quickly readable overview of your skills. i cannot stress the word QUICK enough. try to imagine that the job you want is also wanted from 50 others. the person in charge for choosing the right person won´t take time 2 hours for each portfolio. it is essential to prepare the material that everyone on this planet (!) is able to get a quick overview WITHOUT being multimedia-pro. for those who are it is useful to provide extra information so that when your stuff looks interesting, the person in charge can read and view more of your work. at first however, everybody should be able to quickly view your skills.

an important point is that before you begin to make your portfolio, you shoud carefully think about WHAT you want to represent. this isn´t so clear as it sounds. for example you include some screenshots of a website in your portfolio - then for the person that reads the portfolio it has to be absolutely clear whether you are the PROGRAMMER or the DESIGNER of the website (or both!?). For example, write a short introduction text, saying that you are a “graphic designer with medium flash skills” is different from being a “programmer with a litte graphic design experience”. when you know what you represent it will be easier for you to colmplete the portfolio.

there is a strong distinction between fine art and graphic design. your portfolio will look completely different whether you apply for a art university or a job as a website programmer.
